This book is to be highly recommended for all beginners starting out in Zen. Roshi Kapleau addresses the problems of westerners eager to practice Zen but who have no access to a Zen master to guide and teach them. A full explanation of zazen and instruction of how to practice it is given. Also included are many case histories of students of Zen and the difficulties they experienced and overcome.

Personally, I found this book to be invaluable to me when I first started with Zen and it greatly inspired me when I felt downhearted and ready to give up during the early years of my Zen practice.

U.K Purchases - Zen: Dawn in the West

U.S.A purchases - Zen: Dawn in the West

Zen: Dawn in the West is an excellent companion volume to Roshi Philip Kapleau's The Three Pillars of Zen, which had become one of the most effective 'instruction books' for the practice of Zen for Westerners.

In this new book, Roshi Kapleau includes question and answer sessions from his intensive seminars and workshops in Zen where he speaks to ordinary men and women about what it entails to practice Zen in our time and culture.

Roshi Kapleau touches on subjects such as thought transference, telepathy and psychokinesis from a Zen master's point of view and delves into the vibration and energies that are accessible to all human beings who are willing to practice zazen. One particular memorable and impressive passage from the book quotes the famous Zen Master Dogen... "One person sitting egolessly in zazen becomes imperceptible one with all visible and invisible worlds throughout past, present, and future, carrying on the ceaseless work of leading beings to enlightenment."

Throughout the book the author gives advice not only on where and when to practice zazen, but gives the reasons why.

Many people are led to Zen when life appears useless and pointless, regardless of how successful they have become in life or careers. Roshi Kapleau explains how and why this state of mind arises and how it more than often is a "wake-up call" that can lead to enlightenment.

Reading this work it soon becomes apparent that Zen is not all about seeking and acquiring ecstatic states of mind, but something much more profound than that. It is the serious work of spiritual growth and the development of a better life that will expand into the practitioners world and that of his fellow man.

An altogether well written, inspiring book.

Mind of Clover: Essays in Zen Buddhist... (UK ).

United States - Mind of Clover: Essays in Zen Buddhist Ethics (Right Action Essays Zen Buddhist PR)

Robert Aitken, in this very inspiring book, illuminates the higher states of consciousness that are available to all who are willing to experience them through the practice of Zen. He demonstrates how our minds and lives can become like 'clover' in the way it nurtures and is being nurtured by the soil it lives in by sharing its goodness. For to become compassionate, he gives us deep insight into the paradoxical nature of the Ten Grave Precepts of Zen, which are not written in stone to be obeyed, but more as encouragement and aspiration.

Overall, there are many inspiring words in this little book that assisted me at those times when I felt Zen was hard going and I was almost overwhelmed by my ego telling me that the whole practice of Zen was pointless. It assisted me to welcome these inner resistances whilst keeping my commitment to the whole Zen way of life.

                         -  Life Strategies: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters

Although not strictly a book on Zen, Dr. McGraw's approach to improving the quality of life, is very Zen like in the way that it is a hard hitting, no-nonsense manual to assist the reader in seeing where his/her life is going wrong. There are many written exercises in the book to assist in developing  a greater awareness of self-defeating barriers that most people have operating at a subconscious level.  Read what others have said about it by clicking on the title "Life Strategies"  above and you will be taken directly to Amazon's website where you can read what others have said about it before ordering.
