Vitamin B Products
Derek Ayre, Cardiff. UK. The B group of vitamins are all water soluble and are found in food groups such as brewers yeast, meat, whole-grains, cereals and vegetable proteins. Folic Acid and B12 metabolism are closely connected and Vitamin B2 is required for the metabolism of B6. B3 can be produced from other dietary agents, provided there is an adequate amount of B6. This means that all the B group of vitamins are inter-linked. A deficiency of just one is unlikely, with the exception of B12. Those who usually suffer from deficiencies in Vitamin B are heavy drinkers and alcoholics, growing children and adolescents and those whose diet consists mainly of junk-food. The elderly and those who take certain drugs like antibiotics and contraceptive the pill. Also those who do not handle stress very well. B1 (Thiamin) - Plays a part in energy production and carbohydrate metabolism. B2 ( Riboflavin) - Assists in the metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates. B3 (Nicotinic & Nicotinamide) - Aids with the formation of certain enzymes that are involved in the transport of hydrogen. B5 (Patothenic Acid) Plays a crucial role in many of the reactions involving carbohydrates, amino acids and fats. B6 (Pyridoxine) Important for the metabolism of protein and amino acids. The more protein one eats, the more demand by the body, for vitamin B6. It is also thought to have effects on mood and behaviour patterns and is important for the metabolism of magnesium, zinc and other minerals. B12 - Has been found to be effective in the treatment of pernicious anaemia. Regarded as essential for good health, but only found in animal-based foods. Therefore vegans are particularly prone to deficiency. However, this vitamin can be stored in the body for up to six years. Folic Acid - Linked with B12 and vital for the health of the nervous system. Biotin - Found in meats, dairy produce, and whole-grain cereals. A deficiency is thought to cause fatigue and weakness and can trigger the onset of scaly dermatitis. Choline - Assist with the electrical conductions of nerve impulses and appears to be involved in fat metabolism. Has also been referred to by some as 'brain food'.
