Cardiff. UK. Vitamin E protects polyunsaturated fats from being oxidized into free radicals in the body. It protects all membranes including those in the blood vessel walls. Polyunsaturated fats in the diet are present in fish and seed oils. The vitamin has been at the center of worldwide research and is recognised as a biological antioxidant. Vitamin E does not work alone, but has a close relationship with Vitamin C and Beta Carotene - all working together combating free radicals. Research into Vitamin E in the UK has found that the vitamin is a much safer alternative to taking an aspirin a day - a practice that has been shown to have a risk of bleeding in the gut at even low doses. Also, American studies have shown, in experiments from various countries throughout the world, that individuals, that are at the greatest risk from heart disease and stroke, show the lowest levels of vitamin E in the body.
